Stop for Cookies! An Interview with Mia from the Blue Truck Bakery

Blue Truck Bakery The Front Porch RWC 1

If you happen to be driving through San Carlos on a Wednesday afternoon, we have three words for you: Stop for Cookies! The Blue Truck Bakery, owned by Mia Moretti, is one you don't want to miss. The pop-up bakery opens up shop once a week right in front of Mia's home where she serves up the most delicious cookies from classics like Chocolate Chip to new twists like S'Mores and Coconut Oatmeal. We recently stopped by to ask Mia about the inspiration behind her business, her favorite places to hang around town, and of course, how you can pick up some of her awesome cookies!

Can you tell us a little bit about The Blue Truck Bakery?

Blue Truck Bakery is an idea I’ve been working on for years. As a former teacher, turned stay at home mom, I wanted to try my hand at being a mom-prenuer, yet still have time to spend with my kids. I came up with the idea of  a pop-up bakery, once a week, that solely focused on cookies. I had struggled to find a local bakery that made cookies that were crispy on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside. Don’t get me wrong, I love cupcakes and cakes, but there’s just something special about a mouthwatering cookie. Hence, Blue Truck Bakery was born. It is a pop-up cookie bakery located in front of my home in San Carlos. Every Wednesday from 1-5, we sell 3 different flavors of cookies.  The OG (Original Gangster), our salted chocolate chip cookie, is what started it all and is available every week at our pop-up.

We love the blue truck! What’s the story behind it?

We purchased our 1958 Chevrolet Apache about 6 years ago and my husband, John,  has been improving upon it ever since. Being a toymaker, John has always wanted a “fun” car and when he decided to purchase a vintage truck, I was thrilled.  However, the truck was not always as nice as it is now. When we purchased the truck it was a matte primer gray with a rusted out truck bed. It needed love and lots of it. For over a year, John spent most of his nights and weekends, tirelessly restoring the truck back to its original glory. We wanted a paint color that captured the fun and spirit of 50’s and would feel at home at any drive- in.  The turquoise called to us immediately. Since it looks quite a bit like Mater from Cars, the eyes in the windshield shade were the perfect touch and are my kids favorite part.

How did you get started in baking?

I’ve always loved to bake and have a huge sweet tooth! I grew up in the kitchen baking with my mom and grandma. Some of my favorite memories from childhood are spending time in the kitchen with my grandma, when she would visit each winter, making her homemade biscuits and slovakian nutbread. As an adult, baking has always been a calming force in my life. How can you be stressed when you’re eating a warm cookie?  Am I right?! I’ve always loved sharing my baked goods with family and friends. But it wasn’t until after years and years of encouragement from them that I decided I would go out on a limb and actually try selling them. I’d make cake pops for friends of friends before, birthday cakes, and even a wedding cake, but that was nothing compared to deciding to open an actual bakery. Although I like doing cakes, cookies are my true passion. There is truly nothing better than a warm, homemade cookie in my opinion. So that’s what I’ve decided to share with everyone.

What kinds of ingredients do you use in your cookies? And do you have a favorite?

The better the ingredients, the better the flavor and product.  I try to use all King Arthur Flours and Ghirardelli and Guittard chocolate. My favorite cookie is The OG. I’ve made it for over 10 years and it’s my definite go-to.

You truly are running neighborhood bakery! And you’re from the area? How else are you involved in the local community?

After over a decade of teaching in Belmont and Menlo Park, I’m now staying at home full time to raise my young children. I’m very involved in their preschool and serve on the Parent Advisory Board at their school.

What are your favorite spots around town to eat and play?

Wow! This is a tough one, because I have SO many favorites. Mints and Honey is one of my favorite places to take my kids for a quick weekday treat.  I love a classic turkey sandwich on an oatmeal roll from Gracie’s Deli on Laurel Street. I love Pazzo and Vesta for delicious wood fired pizza and fresh Italian food.  You can usually find us tooling around the Bay Trail or our great neighborhood parks on our scooters, hiking on local trails, or chasing the Mr. Softee truck up and down our neighborhood streets.
